Plans for the international conference on radiation effects in insulators (REI– 81, Italy, 30 June–3 July 1981) were first formulated at a Nato summer school on site characterisation of implanted atoms held in Corsica in 1978. At that time many felt that there was a need for an international meeting that would cater for people who, although working in very different branches of radiation physics and chemistry, were nevertheless united by a common interest in insulators.
