Abstract

Methods for estimating the dose rates to be anticipated from Co 60 and Cs 137 field irradiation sources are presented based on the two-medium theory of Berger. A comparison with experimental values at various distances from several large sources shows reasonable agreement in most cases. A summary of the theory of γ-ray propagation in an infinite medium, a tabulation of dose build-up factors for air, and a discussion of the effect of atmospheric conditions on dose rates are included.
