Abstract

We consider the equations of motion for classical point particles moving in an external long-range attractive scalar field. Taking into account the effects of radiation damping leads to an integro-differential equation similar to the Lorentz--Dirac equation, except for the fact that the preacceleration time now depends on the external scalar field. If the external field is large enough, then the preacceleration time can become large enough to violate macroscopic causality in open systems in which the scalar field plays a part. (AIP)
