Abstract

The radiation crosslinking of low density polyethylene containing a dispersion of silica and titanium oxide was examined in a wide concentration range of the metal oxides, using absorbed doses of radiation from 5 to 200 Mrad. Small additive concentrations were found to be sensitized and radicals were produced in the polymer. The intermolecular crosslinking on exposure of the crystalline polymer to radiation in a heterogeneous system depends on the radical concentration changes in the polymer and its degree of orientation.
