Abstract
For the evaluation and improvement of tyre performance in soft soils it is necessary to know the stress distribution in the contact area and the deformation of soil and tyre. A new type of three-component transducer which can be installed on the surface of rigid and pneumatic wheels is described. This transducer is capable of measuring radial, tangential and lateral stresses. The test results display the stress distribution both along the circumference of the wheel and across its width. The deformation of penumatic tyres on soft ground is investigated. Also described is a six-component measuring device which can be utilised to measure the forces on driven, oblique rolling wheels. The measurements of stress distribution with this dynamometer is to be extended to the same drive conditions.
