Abstract

A solution to the problem of plane wave scattering by a cross-shaped patch antenna printed on a dielectric substrate is presented. The solution begins by formulating an electric field integral equation for a wire grid model of the microstrip patch in the time domain and then, the integral equation is solved by the method of moments. The computation of the radar cross section (RCS) is found to be in good agreement with the measurements over a wide range of frequencies. Additionally, it is found that the resonant frequency of the antenna in the transmitting and receiving modes are identical, except for a slight shift that is proportional to the etched surface area at the antenna corners compared to a rectangular patch antenna.
