Abstract

Shukri Adams (University of Cape Town, South Africa), studying parasite biogeography as a tool for fisheries management, was frustrated: `important publications ... are just not available in this country, and with the terrible Rand–US$ exchange rate and bad postal service, it's very difficult and costly getting publications through interlibrary loans/photocopies.' Why can't people scan papers and e-mail them to those in need? Is it legal to place scans on a website? One reply came: Jerry McLaughlin (University of Indiana, USA) suspected it was not legal, but that classics, where copyright has expired, may provide an exception.
