Abstract

Recent years have shown a surge in interest in fuzzy/temporal database systems, which allow users to store fuzzy time dependent information. Conventional relational systems are often inefficient for fuzzy temporal query processing because new characteristics are not taken into consideration. Representation and querying of temporal information can benefit from the integration of techniques from constraint databases, database models for fuzzy information and reasoning about temporal constraints. This paper investigates algebraic query languages on fuzzy temporal databases. To achieve this, fuzzy temporal query representation, optimization, and processing mechanisms must be provided. It includes a fuzzy temporally extended temporal algebra to which SQL, fuzzy temporal SQL queries may be mapped and concrete query transformation rules obey different equivalences, a procedure for application for optimization a query. Finally, we note how semantic query optimization can play an important and natural role in optimization of fuzzy temporal queries.
