Abstract

Abstract Increases in electrical resistivity after quenching thin bars of uranium monocarbide have been measured and interpreted in terms of lattice vacancies. The activation energy for vacancy formation is deduced as ∼2.8 ev. From annealing experiments the activation energy for movement was found to be ∼1.1 ev and a vacancy makes 5 × 1010−1011 jumps during its lifetime.
