Abstract

The geographical distribution of Dicroglossus occipitalis extends from Western to Central and Eastern Africa. The study of the length-weight relationship of this amphibian does not show any significant difference amongst immatures, adult males and females. Nevertheless the females reach a greater length than the males. The diet, established by qualitative and quantitative analysis, consist of terrestrial insects, myriapods, and fishes. The differences between the feeding habits of the younger and older Dicroglossus are not important, but the older individuals have more diversified feeding habits. Dicroglossus occipitalis mate throughout the year under the climatic conditions of Bangui. However a peak occurs in June, July and August, at the beginning of the rainy season. The fecundity of this species is relatively low ; this fact might be explained by relatively large egg dimensions. The density of the adult Dicroglossus is relatively low (2,7 -10 ind./are) compared with the density of tadpoles ; the same applies for the biomass. Dicroglossus occipitalis do not meet the requirements of stock farming. As a matter of fact, this species of frog does not stand high stocking rates. It feeds essentially on mobile preys and does not accept inert artificial food.
