Abstract

Authigenic palygorskite and associated dolomite in Quaternary sediments are described from two contrasting localities in the Abu Dhabi Emirate (UAE): 1) a continental setting within Sabkha Matti, 2) a coastal sabkha setting at Mussafah Channel, near Abu Dhabi Island. The palygorskite envelops aeolian or authigenic polycrystalline dolomite grains and is accompanied by isolated authigenic dolomite rhombs at both localities. The depositional environments, geochemical conditions and possible biogenic influences controlling the developments of these assemblages are discussed.
