Abstract

In this paper, a combined theoretical and experimental investigation is reported with respect to the influence of mechanical loading on the tibial part of implanted hinged knee prostheses with intramedullary stems. The theoretical analysis is based upon the replacement of the bone-cement-stem configuration by a system of elastic finite ring elements with non-axisymmetric strains and stresses. Material behaviour of cancellous bone, known from literature, shows a large spread in the values of the relevant properties, as compared to the relative deviations of the properties of cortical bone. Therefore the influence of variations of the elastic constants of cancellous bone with isotropic and transversal isotropic behaviour, respectively, has been investigated.
