Abstract

The effect of deuteration on the rotational energy level scheme of methane impurities in solid argon has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The measured transition energies are assigned to the various transitions of spherical tops (CH 4, CD 4), symmetric tops (CH 3D and CHD 3) and asymmetric tops (CH 2D 2) in the crystalline field of the host matrix. The angular variation of the scattered intensities, which is closely related to the wave function of the scatterer, has been investigated in the system CH 3 D Ar and supports the assumption of rotation close to the limit of completely free rotation.
