Abstract

Several features of quantum Hall effect (QHE) breakdown with analogies in classical fluid dynamics are discussed. At high breakdown currents the large velocity gradient and inter-Landau level scattering processes are associated with overlapping skipping states at the edge of the sample can give rise to a dissipative effect analogous to viscous drag. A Reynolds number for breakdown is introduced.
