Abstract
The authors solve the Dirac equation for an electron interacting with a quantised and elliptically polarised electromagnetic field. They use the solution to obtain a relativistic S-matrix amplitude for multiphoton ionisation in the high-intensity limit. Its nonrelativistic limit is also derived and is used to construct a multiphoton transition-rate formula which is compared with previous results.
