Abstract

Previous methods for the evaluation of urban spaces use a qualitative analysis of visual and intuitive sensations. In this paper, a quantitative method for the analysis, evaluation, and adjustment of canal spaces by means of fluctuation theory is proposed. The proposed method consists of two sections, (1) quantitative analysis for evaluation of the canal, and (2) application of quantitative guidelines for the redevelopment of existing canals such that the characteristics of a 1/f fluctuation are maintained. The results of the application of the technique on a canal in China verify the applicability of the method and demonstrate its usefulness in urban planning.
