Abstract
The paper presents the results of a quantitative evaluation of the carbide phases in a new high-speed steel (HSS) substrate and coatings deposited by a physical vapour deposition (PVD) method. The carbides were characterized using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis and automatic image analysis, selective evaluation being possible due to differences in the gray level of the carbides' secondary electron images as well as in the shape and chemical composition of MC-, M 6C- and M 23C 6-type carbide particles. Gray images of pure TiN and TiN with titanium underlayer coatings were subjected to detection, morphological operations and measurements with original Met-Ilo software. It was found that TiN layers are of uniform thickness, while Ti underlayers are less regular.
