Abstract

Eccentric cell dendrites (ECD) from ommatidia of lateral eyes ofLimulus polyphemus were examined. The number of mitochondrial profiles per transverse section (N), the ‘level’ of the section as measured from the distal tip of the dendrite, and the cross-sectional area of the dendrite (A) were measured and it was found thatN=kA1.5. Microvilli of the ECD were traced by means of serial sections; also microvilli attributable to the ECD were counted and their lengths measured. It was concluded that the dendritic surface area is between 10 and 50 times greater than that of a smooth dendrite.
