Abstract

The Journal of Neurocytology has played an important role since this journal was established in 1972. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of its founding Editors, E.G. Gray and Bob Lieberman, the Journal of Neurocytology rapidly became the outlet of record for studies of brain structure. In particular, its high-quality reproduction of electron micrographs allowed the Journal to publish many noteworthy papers on the fine structure of the nervous system. In 1986, Bob Lieberman became sole Editor and his leadership allowed the Journal to prosper and to advance progress in many areas of Neurocytology. The recent explosion in novel technologies has created an unprecedented opportunity to further our understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of the nervous system. It is now possible to image the structure and function of living neurons or glial cells and to use molecular genetic approaches to study the roles of individual proteins both in vitro and in vivo. As a result, laboratories around the world now routinely perform experiments that were purely in the realm of science fiction only a few years ago.
