Abstract
Summary 1. A simple method for the determination of coproporphyrin and uroporphyrin in urine based on extraction by short shakings with ether and amyl alcohol, is described. Oxidation of copro- and uroprophyrinogen to porphyrin is included. A simple way of making recovery experiments is described enabling each labora- tory to control its own methods by means of commercially available standards. The percentage recovery is close to 100 for coproporphyrin and about 80 for uroporphyrin. 2. It is recommended that the method be supplemented by quantitative studies with thin layer chromatography on talc. 3. In some normal urines the uroporphyrin concentration appears to be of the same magnitude as the coproporphyrin concentration.
