Abstract
The paper gives the results of PMR and IR analyses of imidization and depolycondensation processes in solutions and films of poly(acid)amides prepared by polycondensation of bis-( p-aminophenyl)methylphenylmethane with pyromellitic dianhydride and 3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxydiphenyloxide dianhydride. The maximum degree of imidization (⩽98% imidized units for the films at 250°) was determined as well as the activation energies for imidization (21 and 23 kcal/mole for solutions and films respectively). The shape of the kinetic curves is typical for first order reactions to ∼80% imidization. The number average degree of polycondensation is markedly reduced (down to a few units) on heating the poly(acid)amides in solution. Further heating of samples converted from solutions to films leads higher degrees of polycondensation.
