Abstract

Capillary gas chromatographic methods for the routine analysis of the loline alkaloids in bovine blood plasma and urine have been developed. Urine samples diluted with MeOH were suitable for direct GC analysis. Plasma samples, following protein precipitation, were also suitable for direct GC analysis. N-Methylloline was used as an internal standard for these analyses. Peak identities were verified by mass spectrometry and comparison to known standards. The methods should prove to be useful in toxicological studies concerning the role of loline alkaloids in fescue toxicosis.
