When the night falls. A walk across the town The distinction between night and day is part of the basic elements of our existential experience. When the night falls, something happens inside us. With the modernisation of society, and the advent of public lighting, there was a tendency to enter this "other side" of our life - to make life happen "in full daylight". The literary evocations by Eugène Sue, Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens give us material to illustrate this process.
