Abstract

The importance of small business as a vehicle for economic growth has been recognized in many advanced industrial countries. In fact, many governments have directed considerable effort into stimulating small business activity. One of the areas of the economy where there has been a relatively rapid growth of small businesses in recent years is in the sport and leisure industry. Yet, to date, little has been published about the factors which determine the success of small businesses producing sports and leisure goods and services. This study attempts to fill the gap in the literature in much the same way as entrepreneurs in the sport and leisure industry have attempted to fill gaps left in the market for these goods and services. In order to determine those factors which lead to success, the multiple case study approach was used.
