Abstract

Objective To investigate the psychological and behavioral reaction of nurses after workplace violence in hospital, and analyze the cognition of injured nurses on the concept of workplace violence in hospital, as well as the adverse effects caused by violence. Methods A total of 16 nurses suffered from workplace violence in a hospital between July 2014 and July 2015 received a semi-structure interview using phenomenological research method. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi method. Results The cognitions of nurses suffered from violence were poor. The negative emotional reactions were caused by the workplace violence in hospital, such as anger, grievance, unfairness and so on. The helps and supports from hospitals, society and laws were expected to be obtained when nurses faced with violence. Conclusions The workplace violence in hospital has affected the nurses′ physical and mental health and their work enthusiasm seriously. It has hindered the healthy development of the nursing profession. So it is necessary to seek effective measures to deal with and reduce workplace violence in hospital.
