Abstract

Water is a natural resource essential to life. It is essential to food production, economic development and social advancement. In the face of its poor quality, water can bring health risks, serving as a vehicle for a number of biological and chemical agents. In rural areas, the soil and water are widely used for agriculture and livestock, favoring contamination. Lack of sanitation and care of the environment, the presence of residues of organic and inorganic materials and daily activities of rural workers are some of the predisposing factors that can affect their quality. In an attempt to update information about the water quality in rural areas, this article proposes to review legal aspects, water use on the farm, as well as microbiological and chemical contamination.
