Abstract

Py.xi.coc' cus . Gr. fem. n. pyxis box, case, container; Gr. masc. n. kokkos berry; M.L. masc. n. Pyxicoccus boxed coccus. Proteobacteria / Deltaproteobacteria / Myxococcales / Myxococcaceae / Pyxicoccus Vegetative cells are slender rods with tapering ends , 0.7–0.8 × 3–8 µm. Myxospores spherical, often somewhat deformed, optically retractile , 1.4–1.8 µm in diameter (sometimes up to 2.4 µm). Fruiting bodies consist of more or less spherical sporangioles with a distinct outer wall, clustered in sori of variable size . In culture, degenerate fruiting bodies resembling those of Corallococcus coralloides may be produced. Swarm colonies as are typical for the family: soft and slimy, with snaking, undulating veins, without striking pigmentation. Of the proteolytic‐bacteriolytic nutritional type. Type species : Pyxicoccus fallax sp. nov .
