Abstract

The integument of all animals and plants hitherto examined is pyroelectric; the nerve tissue is pyroelectric, too. Starting from this physical fact, it is pointed out that the electrical responses (“generator potentials”) of thermo-receptors, photoreceptors, electroreceptors, chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors can be considered as pyroelectric or piezoelectric signals. The “early receptor potentials (ERP)” generated by short light flashes in the photoreceptors of the eye as well as in the animal or plant integument are typical pyroelectric signals. Our method to establish the pyroelectric coefficient p on living animal or plant material is described.
