Abstract

The 2011/12 cycle of Duma and Presidential elections revealed a paradox. On the one hand, there were unprecedented mass demonstrations in Moscow against the regime. On the other hand, not only election results but also independent public opinion polls showed majority endorsement of Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party. This paper draws on New Russia Barometer survey data to resolve this apparent contradiction.
