Abstract

The NHS in the UK has become the first healthcare organization in the world to commit to becoming carbon neutral, and it intends to achieve this by 2040. The entire surgical community will need to adapt and evolve quickly to ensure that it can play a part in meeting this ambitious target. Operating theatres are hot spots for waste generation and energy consumption. In this article we explore the prudent use of resources, using both low carbon alternatives and a lean service delivery model. Outside of the operating theatre our whole approach to assessing, seeing and treating patients with musculoskeletal pathologies needs to be reconsidered in the context of environmental sustainability. Health promotion and injury prevention will play an enormous part in empowering patients to be in control of their own health. By taking small practical measures in orthopaedic practice we can substantially decrease our waste generation and carbon footprint.
