Abstract

Commercially available sodium and potassium hydrides, freed of protective mineral oil and otherwise used as received, show essentially no reactivity toward trialkylboranes with large steric requirements. In contrast, washing with THF solutions of lithium aluminum hydride produces materials which react rapidly and exothermically to afford quantitative yields of highly hindered trialkylborohydrides.
