Abstract
Vascular endothelial cells (VECs), which are cells located in the inner layer of the vessel wall, maintain the homeostasis of the microenvironment; however, a large accumulation of reactive oxygen species can cause cellular damage. In this study, mulberry anthocyanins were enriched and purified by macroporous resin; the protective effect of mulberry anthocyanins against H2O2-induced injury to VECs was investigated. The results showed AB-8 macroporous resin was suitable for the purification of mulberry anthocyanins, the purity was as high as 82.37% ± 1.79%. Mulberry anthocyanins were effective in restoring H2O2-induced reduction in vascular cell viability, and showcased protective effects against apoptosis. Meanwhile, mulberry anthocyanins increased SOD activity, while it decreased the level of MDA and Xanthine oxidase-1 (XO-1), thus further enhancing the antioxidant defense of VECs. This shows that mulberry anthocyanins can be used as antioxidants and play a positive role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and have certain development value.
