Abstract

1. 1. The Lp(a) lipoprotein was purified from human plasma of Lp(a+) phenotype using ultracentrifugation and gel filtration on Sepharose 4B. 2. 2. The lipoprotein was obtained in about a 10% yield. It was pure as judged by immunological and electrophoretical criteria. 3. 3. The Lp(a) lipoprotein had a hydrated density of 1.09 g/ml and had a sedimentation coefficient corrected for viscosity of −24 S, measured in a solvent of density, 1.20 g/ml at 20°. 4. 4. Quantitative studies using radial diffusion showed that the amount of Lp(a) lipoprotein in the plasma of 27 Lp(a+) individuals ranged from 84 to less than 2.8 mg/100 ml with a mean of 21.3 mg/100 ml.
