Abstract

A LTHOUGH AN UNCOMMON MALFORMATION, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum requires more attention because of the recent availability of surgical procedures. Without prompt diagnosis and operation, the lesion is always fatal, frequently in the neonatal period.1 In this entity, fusion of the pulmonary valve cusps produces complete obstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract. A right-to-left shunt is essential for survival and this occurs at the atria1 level. Perfusion of the lungs is accomplished through a persistent ductus arteriosus.
