Abstract

Prevalence of end stage renal disease (ESRD) continues to rise in the US. In 2018, there were more than 550,000 ESRD patients receiving maintenance dialysis (USRDS, 2020), accounting for an estimated $35 billion of Medicare ESRD expenditures in 2016 alone. Beginning in 2021, Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD are eligible to enroll in Medicare Advantage plans. This study evaluated the costs of incident dialysis initiation among Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) beneficiaries with advanced CKD/ESRD.
