Abstract

This handbook is an illustrated glossary of important biological terms. It gives definitions in Melanesian pidgin for most terms used in elementary English textbooks treating botany, zoology or ecology. It is illustrated with simple drawings to augment the text. The work is aimed primarily at assisting students in high schools and universities who are struggling to understand the many terms to which they are not exposed in their courses in English or in primary school education. It will, however, also prove of interest and humor through the circuitous wordings needed to make largely Latin-based terms insimple telligible in the limited vocabulary of Melanesian pidgin, which is still the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea, the Solomons and the New Hebrides.
