Abstract

The focus of this chapter is to explore and describe the unique characteristics of defence acquisition and to initialise a discussion regarding which types of Business Models (BMs) are suitable in this context. The paper aims to enhance the understanding of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in a defence context, by discussing how BMs, including different types of PPPs, can be used to categorise the emerging spectrum of different forms of defence acquisition. The chapter primarily aims to suggest an agenda for future research and suggests a framework of different types of operational PPPs. Doing so, this contribution draws upon theory from the literature in the areas of BMs and PPPs. This theory is applied on the Swedish defence acquisition sector. The paper then commences a discussion regarding which BMs can be used by a DPA in its dealings with the suppliers on a market that can be characterised as a monopsy, a monopoly, an oligopoly, or a combination of these. Finally, further research in this field is suggested.
