Abstract

Up to 20% of women and birthing people experience perinatal mental health (PNMH) problems,1 a broad spectrum that encompasses symptoms from low mood to psychosis or suicidal urges and ideation. The impact of poor PNMH can be tragic; suicide is the leading direct cause of maternal mortality in the year after birth.2 Mental health problems in pregnancy and the postpartum period can have far-reaching consequences for women, birthing people, and families. Postnatal depression can negatively affect a woman’s ongoing quality of life, mental wellbeing, relationships with family and bonding with her infant.3
