Abstract

The evolutionary persistence of pubic hair is not understood, though theories include a role in pheromonal signaling and friction reduction. Pubic hair develops under control of androgens, and this development can be graded using the Tanner scale. Evidence of body hair and pubic hair removal date back to ancient Egypt, though pubic hair removal has become increasingly common this century. Preference for hairless genitals is known as acomoclitism. Pubic hair removal may hold benefits regarding sexual satisfaction, though little factual evidence exists. Allegedly, the current practice of removing the majority of pubic hair originated in South America; hence the term “the Brazilian.” Terms such as “Brazilian,” “Hollywood,” and “Boyzillian” are used to describe the extent of pubic hair removal, but no consensus exists.
