Abstract

The student counseling in Copenhagen has now existed for 25 years. The development of the organization, its professional members, and their aim in counseling students are described. The client frequency is 1.4% of the total student population, which is low compared with frequencies seen in the health student centers in other Nordic countries. Most clients come from the humanistic courses, and twice as many women as men seek treatment. The psychiatric covering in the counseling is very low-that is, three psychiatrists 3 h a week. In this study the psychiatric consultations over a 3-year period (n = 61) with one of the psychiatrists are described. Seventy-five per cent of the clients are less than 30 years old, typically 26 years. The average length of studying is 4.9 years. The most frequent reasons for admission are anxiety (27%), problems of identity (20%), and interpersonal difficulties (18%).
