Abstract

Patients with disorders of self-regulation (psychosis, trauma, addiction, dissociative disorder, borderline organization) tend to act out different contradictory ego states. Therefore, even during the first sessions they often disturb the therapeutic relationship severely. Patient and therapist are able to find their way in their chaotic relationship with the help of psychodramatic positioning. Using empty chairs they can concretize and realize their alternating parts of the self (thinking, feeling, acting) on stage. This positioning in the course of a therapeutic relationship gives necessary support to patient and therapist. It facilitates the clarification of the therapeutic relationship. Also the positioning of the parts of the self is a foundation to work creatively on the central pathology of these patients, precisely the unconscious switches between different contradictory ego states.
