Abstract

Transformation pseudoelasticity and shape memory effects in alloys are reviewed on an introductory to intermediate level — the review is not intended to be exhaustive. What pseudoelasticity and shape memory effects are and how such phenomena arise, are described in simple terms in the introduction. The stress induced martensitic transformation is then discussed in some detail from both the crystallographic and thermodynamic aspects, including successive stress induced martensitic transformations. Transformation pseudoelasticity, orientation dependence, temperature dependence, and strain rate dependence are described. The shape memory effect is discussed in some detail, emphasis being placed on the deformation mechanism of martensites and the origin of the one-way and two-way memory effects. Finally, a short description is given on recent advances in the application of those effects.
