Abstract
Zhang, J., 20.2.2015. Pseudapiocera shandongensis gen. et sp. nov., a protapiocerid fly (Diptera: Brachycera: Protapioceridae) from the Early Cretaceous Jehol biota, China. Alcheringa 39, xx–xx. ISSN 0311-5518One impression fossil of a protapiocerid fly was examined and is described here as a new species in a new genus: Pseudapiocera shandongensis. It is the first record of Protapioceridae from East China. This discovery suggests that protapiocerid flies were already diverse in the Early Cretaceous. The diagnosis of Protapioceridae is revised and supplemented based on the new well-preserved fly impression. The age of the protapiocerid-bearing non-marine sedimentary rocks is middle Early Cretaceous rather than Late Jurassic or Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous based on radiometric dating. The systematic relationships between Protapioceridae, Apioceridae and Mydidae are re-assessed: they are interpreted to be sister groups with a common ancestor earlier in the Mesozoic.Junfeng Zhang [jfzhang@nigpas.ac.cn], College of Palaeontology, Shenyang Normal University, Shenyang, 110034, PR China; and Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 39 East Beijing Road, Nanjing, 210008, PR China.
