Abstract

This chapter discusses providers of adult education. The providers of adult education, however that term is defined, have always constituted a motley array, at any rate since the time when religious organizations ceased to be the sole or main purveyors of education. Indeed a contemporary commentator referring to the number of providers described the field of adult education as either a rich profusion, or as a muddle. Voluntary organizations continued to be the main providers of adult education until well into the first third of the present century. National coordinating bodies, specifically designed to advance adult education, exist, but usually there would be only one such organization in a country. Sometimes there are voluntary organizations which were established entirely for adult education such as the Peoples Educational Association of Ghana. Some national and international organizations for women, and youths may be included, though most are better classified in the next category.
