Abstract
A solid-state proton magnetic relaxation investigation has been carried out between 50 and 500 K on the five nucleic acid bases adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine and uracil, and on a sample of calf thymus DNA. Methyl group reorientation, characterized by an activation energy of 6.2 kJ/mole−1, is responsible for proton relaxation in solid thymine. The thymine methyl groups are also the probable chief source of relaxation in the DNA sample.
