Abstract

The yields of prompt γ-rays from vanadium, bombarded by 3.5–6.0 MeV protons were measured. Excitation functions were determined and the cross-section data used to calculate correction factors for proton range effects in different matrices. Sensitivities were calculated for the ten γ-rays most suitable for quantitative purposes, and possible sources of interference are listed. Precision ranged between 2.4 and about 8% depending on the selected γ-ray and proton bombarding energy, for the determination of vanadium in standard steels over the concentration range 0.10–3.04% (mass).
