Abstract

A spectrophotometric procedure is described for the determination of vanadium and for the simultaneous determination of iron and vanadium by means of two wavelength measurements, at 470 and 540 nm or 418 and 470 nm. It is based on the formation of chelate complexes with β-isopropyltropolone. The complex is extracted with chloroform and in the presence of alcohol the color develops rapidly and is stable for at least 24 h. The precision of the calibration curve is 1 % relative standard deviation. The application to the analysis of NBS Standard Reference Material steel samples is presented.
