Abstract

Complaints about the quality of sleep in older have a high prevalence due to various factors: sleep physiological changes that occur with aging, primary sleep disorders, secondary disorders to pathologies, treatments or psychosocial factors of the elderly, and poor sleep hygiene. They are associated with high subjective stress, increased risk of falls and raise the possibility of long-term care, institutionalization and impaired quality of life and functional cognitive ability. In this paper we analyze the main sleep disorders in the elderly, especially focusing on the primary sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, periodic movements of sleep, circadian rhythm disorder, the disorder of REM sleep behavior and hypersomnia, both pharmacological and therapeutic measures and otherwise, we have at our disposal.
