Abstract

An asthmatic exacerbation is defined as an episode when the patient's baseline situation worsens that requires a change of treatment. The initial step is to evaluate the severity based on objective parameters. Treatment will depend on severity. The drugs used for these exacerbations are essentially the short-acting beta2 agonists, short-acting anticholinergics, both of which are inhaled and at high doses, together with systemic corticosteroids. More severe episodes will require admission to a unit where the patient can be strictly monitored and rapid action taken in the event of ventilatory deterioration.
