Abstract

Cardiorenal syndrome is defined as acute or chronic dysfunction of the heart or kidneys which may lead to damage in the other organ. There are 5 types of cardiorenal syndrome and they are classified according to whether they affect the heart (types 1 and 2) or the kidneys (types 3 and 4) or if systemic involvement leads secondarily to simultaneous heart and kidney damage (type 5). The pathogenesis of acute kidney damage in patients with heart failure is due to haemodynamic factors, neurohumoral mediators and inflammatory mechanisms. Treatment is complex, given that often therapies which are good for the heart harm the kidneys, and vice versa. It is important to use drugs that improve heart functioning and relieve symptoms, and it is also important to continue monitoring kidney function.
